WHAT THE GIF?!

Gif, or jif or gaf, with a hard G or a soft G and one endless, futile debate: this very popular file format, also known by its original non-abbreviated name Graphics Interchange Format, has been keeping us entertained for the past 30 years.

Gif, or jif or gaf, with a hard G or a soft G and one endless, futile debate: this very popular file format, also known by its original non-abbreviated name Graphics Interchange Format, has been keeping us entertained for the past 30 years.

Obvious question: why? In the age of video and 4G and 4D and 4K, you'd think that we'd lose interest in the 5-second short moving image.  Turns out, it's more popular than ever. Here's why:

1. The file size is significantly lower than that of a video and only slightly higher than that of a standards image, so it can travel at a good speed online.

2. If a picture says a thousand words, imagine what 30 frames can do in 5 seconds.

3. Building on the previous point, businesses can build stronger campaigns by tapping into the motion field.

4. Because it has motion, it has a bigger chance of attracting attention in a predominantly static environment.

5. It can easily be turned into either a comical piece of social media culture.

With all of this in mind, we definitely see the value of using GIFs (soft G, so not G for GIFT, but g for giraffe) and who knows, maybe we can start the next big trend of #CatGIFs.
